A decade ago (1998) seems like yesterday for a 30plus. I remember I have just completed my first degree and was preparing to go for my second degree then. I wanted to throw my first PC and prepare to contruct a brand new second PC to bring over to UK.
So much as for the second. How about the first then?
Somehow it was also a year for many first time in IT industry.
It was the year that AMD K6-2 running on Super Socket 7 is faster than Pentium 2 running on Slot 1. For memory was also the year where by finally moves from EDO RAM to more reliable SDRAM. It was the first time I purchase a CD-writer. That was the first time CD-writer is afforable (SGD$200 plus), fast and support rewriterable CD. For the first time no more ugly ISA and totally moves to PCI and AGP. Hence For sound card it was Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI and for AGP it was S3 Virge GX2. 3dfx Voodoo was too expensive for me then. The PCI slot also contain my 3Com Network card that connects to my Cable modem (Broadband) for the first time too!
For storage, it was a 8GB Harddisk the mainboard bios has not longer having the Interrupt 13h problem. The PC was huge and heavy and weight more than 10kg.
wiki on Int 13h problem
2 Days ago I bought a SAN micro SDHC 8GB for my mobile phone. It cost less than SGD$90. My mobile phone is small, light and I bring it everywhere I go. The mobile phone that runs the storage probably is having the similar kind of CPU processing power, memory capacity, graphics capability and network connectivity. Hence, as you can see mobile computing isn't a very far fetch thing and it is something that is real.
So what do mobile computing can do then? Well, what does people want then?
With 8GB of storage,
1GB for you to store your genome and all you medical record
2GB for you to store 1 season of TV series (22 episodes of flash video format 320x240)
2GB for you to store 80 CD of music (22 songs of 64bit wma format)
1GB for you to store 1000 novels (word format)
1GB for you to store 2000 photos (2 Mega Pixel)
0.5 GB for you to store all your e-mails with attachments (3 years)
0.5 GB for you to store all the mobile application (200 games and application)
Hence we can say many business today runs on Mobile Computing. Many business today are using e-mail to do confirmation. You can store all you e-mail in your pocket, that allows you to access to your business, at any time, any where, including viewing your attachment.
Hence there are many jobs for a mobile and wireless specialist to help to make the businesses tick. Click HERE to see the list of jobs that a fresh mobile and wireless specialist can apply.
Did not see any word on Mobile or Wireless in the list of jobs? It is given and it is part of the job.
1) Network Engineer/System Administrator
Most company have Enterprise Wireless Network to managed beside their Wired Network.
Hence Network Engineer refer to Wired and Wireless Network Engineer.
2) Application Developer/Software Engineer
Most application is now either on Laptop, Mobile Phone or PDA.
Hence Application Developer refer to PC/Internet/Mobile Phone Application Developer.

Phones and Tabletops
When I first applied to enter MWC, it seemed like a programming course.
Then it turned out to be a course without prospective career opportunities.
And finally, now it is the future.
The future as we envision it to be is one where people own gadgets sensitive to movement and touch, just like the movie 'Minority Report'. In fact, there are phones and tabletops under development or even fully developed for market sales currently.
Also, take a look at the recent LG Viewty, which I have seen since a week ago. Touch-screen, touch keypad, the way technology is advancing in.
Mobile, wireless, sleek, and cool, if you ask me.

Skype Phone
Currently I am teaching a subject on Voice over IP. One of the famous product for Voice over IP is skype. When we talk about skype, normally we will think of using computer to chat with one another there are actually many other implementation of skype that does not need to switch on the computer!
1) Skype Mobile Phone (Only in UK)
This basically is a mobile phone that all calls go through skype. Well this is not so good as it is only working in UK and does not work else where.
2) Skype on PSP
This is a great product for many students who own a PSP. Not sure how this fair, can any one update me on this?
3) Skype on Windows Mobile
I have not got a chance to try out this even though we have quite a few of Window Mobile device lying around. Has anyone using this now?
4) Skype on Nokia Tablet
Well even though it is linux based, I still think that Nokia Tablet is too expensive to own and moreover iPhone now has a SDK.
5) Skype on WiFi
This has been selling in Sim Lim square for quite sometime. Not sure how it would fair. The problem with this is the screen is too small and not sure whether it will support WPA2.
6)Skype Desk Phone (This is what I want!!!! wait for delivery .....)
It cost me USD $170 not including shipping.
I think it is a good present for my parents who does not know how to use a PC, and often need to make long distance call.
Well there is a skype scheme that I think is quite cheap if you make alot of calls. It is call unlimited world. If you only want singapore only they also have unlimited country.

If you are interested in similar technology, not so long ago, I have a major project group working on that. You can send a e-mail to me if you are interested to further working on that project.
Of course there are also other companies that offers similar services, just to name a few.

First Post : MWC and Me
Hey all,
Haha yea it was 1 year ago since I entered the course MWC. I was a normal secondary school student then. I remembered putting the course MWC as the 8th choice and got a little sad when I entered this insignificant course. However things started to change after a MWC video was shown to me; basically MWC is forgetting about all the cables around you and getting connected wirelessly. In the near future everything around you will abandon wires and anywhere and anytime you can communicate to everyone. Cool isn't it? If you still don't get the whole picture you can imagine that everywhere you go there is internet access for you to get in touch with.
Last but not least I know everyone who comes to polytechnic is to learn skills and prepare for the society. We welcome any race, any size or any type of people to MWC and thus we will prepare you to contribute for the future world. After 3 years of studying at MWC, just memorise this line: "Is the world ready for you?"
