There are many choices for Notebook. Well there are also many choices for Netbooks as well. You can purchase a Intel Go2 Netbook through Amazon for US$400. 
They can run both XP and Linux that comes with 1.6Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM, 9" LCD, with up to 40GB Harddisk.
Or you can choose to look at the other alternatives.
