About 3 weeks ago,
9 members of MWCSIG, together with the Freshmen went for an 8 days Overseas Community Project at Hai Nan!

We also visit the primary schools....

and to paint their school.

We have the chance to experience farm stay at one of their village in Wen Chang, named "xin jing chun".
We had the chance to...

...farm for the first time in our life....

....to make "Kong Ming" lantern...

....and to set them off into the sky at night.

Those times we had there were so memorable.

This 8 days OCP trip was indeed fun and enjoyable. We've got the chance to make new friends and to know more about their life and culture. Also, we've learnt to be more independent and to treasure the things we had; Friendship and Kinship, they are priceless....

Get credits point by playing games?

While Lee Wei and Ying Yin is preparing themselves for the MIT GAMBIT interview, I was looking at what is happening the Gaming World. Well it is interesting to found a subject for College Students that is about playing Games instead of Creating Games.

Students in UC - Berkeley can take up StarCraft studies for college credits.

One of the line that I am quite interested for the course is "Calculus and Differential Equations are highly recommended for full understanding of the course." I think it is mainly on to the - flanking maneuver.

Well, here is what I pickup from the course web site
Week 3 Question 1.
A Terran Siege Tank in Siege Mode attacks for 70 damage, has 150 hp, and 1 armor. This
means that after two upgrades, a Siege Tank can kill another Siege Tank in two hits
instead of three. What are other significant damage combos? Be sure to investigate not
just upgrades and numbers of hits, but also unit group combinations. Which numbers are
worth noting?

Is it more advantageous to attack in a line or to envelop your opponent’s army? Prove your point using flux calculations.

Need to connect your Notebook to the internet at the same time connect to a device (PDA) through Wi-Fi?

What you need was to connect both to an Access Point then. You may face lots of difficulties trying to connect some device to the Enterprise Access Point.

Intel came out with a new solution.
Simply put it, Intel My WiFi turns a notebook into an Wi-Fi AP that seamlessly takes care of all of the Wi-Fi connection details, allowing users to quickly connect to their devices. On one hand this is great news for some.

However, I wonder whether, this has been tested with current many Companies Wi-Fi Network security feature that shuts down Rouge AP features? Like Trapeze or Aruba.

SDXC Card for Quad HDTV (Next thing after BlueRay)

There are many exciting things happening this year.
Recently Toshiba and some other Monitor Company release the next generation Quad Full High Definition (QFHD)(3840 x 2160) LCD screen. Basically, it is 56 inch in term of size.

Finally, it reach to a stage of decent definition for watching movies. I think it need some decent storage media. I hope SDXC (Up 2 Terabyte for Storage) will be the storage media for this level of definition. No need to worried about the scratches any more.

Hmmmmmm 2 Terabyte for storage. My current biggest hard disk is not even there yet. It would be interesting to carry one around and store lots of rubbish in it.

Editor: Lee Wei, how were your results all along in Sec Sch and also for Pri Sch?

Lee Wei: I was one of the average ones in my class, hovering a little here and a little there. I didn't do as well as I should have, and scored only 12 points. This was the case in primary school as well, also an average student, attaining a PSLE score of 238.

Editor: What were the criteria you considered during the Joint Admission Exercise? How was the process and how did you arrive at a decision?

Lee Wei: Definitely, it was interest. I was only interested in IT and Physics, and since I could not get into my dream JC, I decided, 'Hey, why not my dream Poly?'.

Editor :Why did you choose to study in Diploma in MWC? Which choice did you indicate Diploma in MWC as in your selection form for the Joint Admission Exercise?

Lee Wei: Well, it was stated on the TP website that MWC had programming, which I was fairly interested in. So up it went as my first choice.

Editor: What are three things you like/enjoy about Diploma in MWC?

Lee Wei: It has programming involved.
It is rather focused.
It is the future.

Editor: Who do you think is suitable to take Diploma in MWC?

Lee Wei: Well, anyone who fancies programming or gadgets. We get to deal quite a bit with PDAs and the likes!

Editor: Why do you think Diploma in MWC is a good choice to consider?

Lee Wei: It is the future; almost everything will be wireless. Furthermore, it also teaches you other general areas of IT.

Editor :What advice do you have for ‘O’ level school leavers who are going to make their selection soon?

Lee Wei: Follow where your interest(s) and dreams take you, no matter if its foreign or otherwise. With passion, you can overcome these minor obstacles with great ease. XD

She is the Vice President of MWC Special Interest Group. Actively she took part in various events like OpenHouse, Xperiment Exhibition, Flag Day, Competition and so on. Moreover, she also help in co-ordinating various events.

Editor: Tan Ying Yin, how were your results all along in Sec Sch and also for Pri Sch?

I was formally from Geylang Methodist Primary School and Geylang Methodist Secondary School under Express Stream Academic. My results were quite average when I was in Primary school and when I'm in Secondary School, my grades improved a little and dropped back to average when I was in the upper secondary, mainly because I didn't like the subjects I'm studying at that time. Luckily, I managed to pass my O levels and made it to a Polytechnic.

Editor: What were the criteria you considered during the Joint Admission Exercise? How was the process and how did you arrive at a decision?

I did not consider myself to choose an IT course in the first place as my interest was in Business and Arts. So during JAE, the first 8 courses that I have choosen is all related to Business and Arts and the rest are IT. However, when the results were out, I was not posted to any courses at all! A close friend of mine was posted to MWC and was thinking about re-appealing. Thus, I followed her to TP to look for an advice. Our current lecturer attended to us, and provide us with additional information about the course. After giving some thought, my friend and I decided to chose this course!

Editor: What are three things you like/enjoy about Diploma in MWC?

The three things I enjoy about MWC is programming, the CDS (Cross-Disciplinary Subjects) offered and the people in TP! I know alot of people out there hates programming and are influencing others not to take IT. It is so not true! Programming is so fun to learn! Every time when I managed to solve something difficult in programming, I will feel a great sense of satisfaction and the urge to improve even more! Even though I could not get into the course I want to be in initially, the CDS offered by TP allows me to do so. I took up Entrepreneur, Singapore Law and Psychology during the past semesters in TP and they were great! In TP, we play hard and study smart. The people in TP are so fun to mix with!

Editor: Who do you think is suitable to take Diploma in MWC?

Anyone! Our course involves mainly on mobile and wireless technologies. For example, by using your mobile phone, you can access to the internet by Wi-fi, book tickets, etc. They works just like a portable computer. Can't you see that the world is getting more and more dependent on mobile and wireless technologies. Thus, we believed that the furture belongs to the wireless world!

Editor: Why do you think Diploma in MWC is a good choice to consider?

It is challenging and never fails to excite you on how technologies are so powerful nowadays. I never regret coming to this course at all!

Editor :What advice do you have for ‘O’ level school leavers who are going to make their selection soon?

If you did not managed to get into the course you wanted, do not be downhearted. Try to give yourself more options to consider.Studying in MWC has changed me, to be a more responsible and a studious person. Even if you cannot get into the course you are interested in, try to be optimistic! For example, I wan to be an entrepreneur in the future, although I cannot get to any business course, MWC and the CDS which I have taken are able to teach me relevant information about business, so that in the future I can manage my business better!

The world's slimmest LCD TV

Hi there! We apologise for the lack of updates! Time really flies! We're in year 2009 already!

I've just read an article posted by Yahoo which is rather interesting; thus, I'm going to share it with all of you here. As mentioned in the title of this post, my entry today will be about the world's slimmest LCD TV.

This LCD TV is a product from South Korea's Samsung Electronics and it measures only at 6.5 millimetres thick!!! This is even slimmer than most of the mobile phones we are using! Isn't it amazing!?

- 6.5 millimetres thick
- 12.2 kg
- Embedded with a fast wireless connection
- Signal cables are not necessary
- Estimated price range: 490,000 yen

According to Yahoo, this new product will be displayed during Consumer Electronics Show 2009 in Las Vegas from the 8th to 11th January. Hopefully this new product will launched in Singapore soon!

2008 - Yahoo! Mobile Developer Awards

About 2 months ago, 4 teams from Mobile and Wireless Computing represented TP to take part in a competition organized by Yahoo! These teams are given 1 month to develop widgets for one of the four sponsors, namely, DBS Bank, Kellogg’s Asia Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Airlines, and UEEEU.com. Only one team from each category will be selected as the winner.

Congratulations to our senior students Wong Jing Xuan and Suhaimi Bin Bohari for doing us proud! Their widget were picked by Kellogg’s Asia Sdn Bhd as the top developers for the widgets they created for the company.

MWC Napfa training for Freshman

Firstly I will like to apologise to all MWC blog supporters as i have been really busy and manage to squeeze time for now. HAHA! Diploma in Mobile Wireless Computing just held their first ever Napfa Test for the freshman at 17th October 2008. Basically the purpose of this event is to create awareness among the freshman male to tell them where they stand and they could spend 2 years more to train up before their NS napfa. We believe that this first ever freshmen Napfa in Temasek Poly is a huge success. Just look at the tremendous response :

Games Convention Asia (GCA)

Just last Saturday, 20th Sep, the Games Convention Asia (GCA) was held at Suntec Convention Hall. Many many games were displayed there, from the popular to the soon-to-be-released, from big huge companies to small private organisations. There was just no end to the games as well as their consoles. Terminals and consoles were packed with the young and the young at heart, and several mascots roamed the hall.

TP's GET even had their own booth, showcasing games that the students had developed!

Well, I never knew THAT many people were into cosplay(CosCon - Cosplay Contest): numerous groups of friends gathered in and out the convention hall, preparing their makeup and and image to portray their favourite characters in the games. Everyone had great fun with cosplay, posing for photos and taking pictures. =)(Nice Photos at CosCon - Here and Here and Here)

But the main highlight of the convention had to be the competition of a number of games. Amongst these games, one of them, DotA, had 2 team finalists compete with each other, with their match flashed on a great big projector screen for all spectators to see. The battle was intense; both sides put up a good fight. It was a pity I couldn't stay to watch the match end.

What does this has to do with Mobile Communication?
Well, Let think about Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS requires very actual clock (atomic clock) (Wiki) to measure location. This technology comes from particle physics. We learned particle physics by experimenting with particle accelerator.

Quantum Teleportation may be further enhance through the LHC.

What is Quantum Teleportation (Wiki)

So what has Quantum Teleportation to do with Mobile Communication?
For current state, it can help to provide secure wireless communication. Today there are many engineer and scientist that are working in this area. (IEEE Paper)

You may want to ask how does LHC comes into the picture then?
One thing of which is Superluminal (Wiki) Communication. We are still not able to achieve Superluminal communication, we can make use of LHC.

Okay, okay what if LHC still cannot resolve no-communication theorem (Wiki) and the theory still holds?

Well, we still can make use of LHC to learn more about neutrino!

Bug in DNS

Well, I know I'm slow, and the news is a little late, but better late than never, they always say.

Just wanted to share this piece of news, that, from my understanding so far, has been a little hushed-up. Its regarding a bug that hackers have exploited in Domain Name Servers / System(DNS), to re-route internet traffic to their own websites. These malicious hackers use their own websites to impersonate official / commercial websites, for reasons such as collecting personal information. This bug in the DNS vulnerability is a great security issue, and many top security researchers are concerned. Several patches have been developed to address the issue, so the situation is generally under control.

*DNS - name-to-address mapping system that translates names you can remember (such as www.doxpara.com) to numbers the Internet can route (66.240.226.139)

okay, we know that RFID on credit is not safe, but you don't have a RFID credit card, do you think that you are safe? Well read the following and determine it for yourself.

"A German computer security consultant has shown that he can clone the electronic passports that the United States and other countries are beginning to distribute this year. " This story <here> runs 2 years ago!

What is e-passport?
E-passport contains your bio-information in RFID chip that is placed in the passport. All US Visa Waiver Program country passport would be in have that in place and Singapore is one of the country.
The standard is from ICAO BAC International Civil Aviation Organization Basic Access Control which US Feds think that it is safe <Original Story from here>.

Our diploma has recently had a new addition of staff!

Miss Pauline joined TP just 1 week ago, and had her staff orientation of TP. Here is what she has to say thus far:

How did you become a lecturer in TP?

I wanted to have the opportunity to team up with the young and fresh programmers, and impart my knowledge to them. This is due to my work in my previous company, where I managed several younger programmers.

What were you doing previously?

I worked at a company writing software applications and developments.

How did you find the staff orientation?

The HR people were very warm, and they taught me many things about TP.

What module(s) will you be teaching?

I'm not too sure yet, it hasn't been finalised. However, I expect that it will be more related to desktop or mobile programming.

How do you feel to be part of the TP IIT MWC teaching team?

So far, I'm new here, so I don't know what's ahead at the moment. I don't know how it will be like later on, but I am happy, and I want to value-add to the teaching.

When will you start teaching?

I'm not too sure yet, it also hasn't been finalised. But it could be the upcoming semester or the following one.

Currently they are bigger growth in terms of mobile subscriber.

Different Schools that took part(above)

29th of August will be remembered by several secondary schools espically Zhong Hua Secondary School as they clinched top in the ALICE competion held by Temasek Polytechnic while Raffles Secondary School came in runner-up. Our MWC team of students reporters went there to get the first hand information on how the participants felt after the competition.

First runner-up - Raffles Institution (above)

Reporter: Who introduced and taught ‘Alice’ progromming to your group?

Raffles Institution: We got to know this programme through this competition. Nobody really taught us this programme, we did quite a reasonable amount of research online and with the help of our teachers we managed to make our project work.

Reporter: Did you encounter any difficulties ?

Raffles Institution : Computer’s processing speed has been an issue as only our school computers have the programme. We also felt limited in some ways and we did not have much time doing the project as we are preparing for our exams at the same time. Beside these problems, we had no problem with it as we are rather familar with programming.

Reporter: Will you join Temasek Polytechnic’s School of Informatic and IT after your ‘O’ Levels?

Raffles Institution: We will think about it.

IEEE 802.11r

IEEE 802.11r is part of the Wi-Fi Standard. (Wiki) This happened for quite a while, but however, it takes some time for people start to notice it. (Story 1) (Story 2)

Well these stories did not get some of the facts correct. Indeed, IEEE 802.11r roaming faster when compare with IEEE 802.11i (Security)+ IEEE 802.11e (Quality of Service). (See my conference paper). But it is does not do roaming any faster when compare with no security at all.Well just to add on, IEEE 802.11k has become part of Wi-Fi Standard last year 2007.

So some work has completed, some work has just began. IEEE 802.11y, IEEE 802.11z, and IEEE 802.11aa is now work in progress.

Getting your iPhone 3G soon? Well, Here is something that you need to be aware of....

If you have been following with arstechnica news, the antenna is working fine. With the firmware patch and the network working fine. The only possibility is the chipset.
I hope they figure out the issue soon enough. Well I still hope to get iPhone 3G myself.
